Ti Lung Birthday Tribute

To celebrate the birthday of Shaw Brothers icon Ti Lung, me and a host of others writers share our favourite movies from his vast career. Thanks to Shaolin Chamber 36 for asking me to contribute. “Ti Lung is an action icon in the truest sense. In fact, listing his best kung fu flicks is extremely tough because there are so many greats, just as you’d expect from someone whose career was forged at the iconic Shaw Brothers studios. I also …

The Top Martial Arts Movie Villains

The Book The Film The T-Shirt presented this piece to coincide with the release of my book, Life of Action! In any story of good vs evil, a hero needs a strong, worthy villain to overcome. The best villains will always appear as good as (if not better than) the unlikely protagonist and only through sheer perseverance and battling the odds will our hero ultimately emerge triumphant. Throughout the decades, the martial arts genre has seen many villains transcend status as generic “bad guys” …

The Best Martial Arts Horror Movies

Horror Cult Films presented this piece to coincide with the recent release of my book, Life of Action! When two extreme genres collide, the results are nothing short of spectacular. Spanning well known and loved films from both the East and West, the tradition of blending dynamic fight action and blood ’n guts has always appealed to audiences and brought together the best of both worlds for genre fans. To celebrate the release of Life of Action, a new book featuring …

Bodyguard: A New Beginning on HBO

If you haven’t seen it, this is well worth a look. Bodyguard: A New Beginning from writer, director and producer Chee Keong Cheung is showing on HBO this month! You can view showtimes here. As a big fan of the film since its release back in 2008, I can definitely recommend it. Alongside Cheung and co-star/producer Mark Strange, the film was also produced by Mike Leeder, who worked on the casting and makes a cameo, plus it features a great roster of …

Steve Austin’s Greatest Hits

I’m a big fan of Steve Austin and the raw style he brings to the broad spectrum of action movies. While I love elaborate action films and crazy Martial Arts and stunt displays, there’s something homely about good ol’ fashioned toughness and action doing exactly what it says on the tin. Delivering his Stone Cold persona and brand onto the screen, he pays homage to the somewhat vintage, back-to-basics qualities of old time heroes and villains, relying on natural charisma, flair …

Steven Seagal’s Mercenary: Absolution

With the release of Steven Seagal‘s latest movie, Mercenary: Absolution, I took the opportunity to not only catch the big man’s new flick, but willfully digress a little into my fascination with all things Steven. I’ve always had a soft spot for Steven Seagal movies. Most fans will agree there are those classics that everyone mentions (Nico, Out For Justice, Under Siege) and then, in more recent years, a very mixed bag of the awful (Attack Force, Flight of Fury) to …

Darren Shahlavi passed from natural causes

The family of the late martial arts actor, Darren Shahlavi, has confirmed that he tragically died of natural causes on 14 January 2015, a sudden and fatal heart attack. I was (and still am) extremely saddened about Darren’s passing. He was a wonderful person, a great talent and real source of inspiration for many. What’s more, he was just reaching the cusp of greatness, having recently appeared in several prolific films and increasingly strong roles, which reaffirms the tragedy of this great artist lost far too …

Midnight Run arrives on Blu-ray

The classic 1988 road movie, Midnight Run, makes its much awaited arrival on Blu-ray for the very first time. Never missing out on the chance to revisit an all-time favourite, this new release comes with a range of brand new extras including newly filmed interviews with the cast and crew, giving fresh perspective on the making of a much-overlooked modern classic. For fans of this buddy comedy/road movie gem, this version presents the best opportunity to catch it in all its glory. For anyone who never saw the …

My “Best Action Hero of All Time”

Michael Beck in The Warriors

Big thanks to The Action Elite for including me in their feature “The Best Action Heroes of All Time”. They asked many different people about their favourite genre protagonists and, of course, I have so many. I could easily list John McClane, The Terminator, Dutch from Predator and countless others. However, wanting to be a bit more niche and unusual than that, I opted for main man Swan from my all-time favourite film, The Warriors. You can see the original piece and full list here …

RIP Darren Shahlavi (1972-2015)

I am extremely shocked and saddened to hear about Darren’s passing. He was a great and genuine person, a true talent and a real source of inspiration. He was always very kind and supportive of me and my projects. I was (and am) exceptionally proud to have him included in Life of Action. Now, I’m saddened that I won’t get to share the finished book with him. His work and accomplishments will always remain his legacy and I only hope he …
