Remembering Corey Yuen
It’s been sad to learn that legendary action filmmaker, martial arts choreographer and actor Corey Yuen has passed away. According to sources, he died in 2022 but the news was kept quiet by family and friends, allowing them to mourn peacefully.
Most people who grew up watching martial arts cinema, especially in the 1980’s and 90’s, will have a close connection with much of his work. From starting his career in the 1970's and helping define the international tide of Hong Kong action cinema, set by himself and many of his contemporaries, his work has left a huge mark. He made waves not only through his best loved Hong Kong work, but also his crossover into Hollywood, helping change the language and techniques of western action: how it was designed, shot, edited and performed. Directors, producers and stars all wanted a piece of the magic he brought to their work.
From his unique action design in Eastern Condors and She Shoots Straight, to directing Yes, Madam! Righting Wrongs and The Transporter, among others (with Jason Statham given a distinct dose of Hong Kong action flair), Corey Yuen infused style and energy into all his work. He built a strong bond with many top tier action stars, notably elite collaborations with Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah and many others. He always brought the best out of his friends and peers, and pushed even world class action talent to deliver their absolute best work. This is surely the mark of not simply a great choreographer or filmmaker, but the qualities of a trusted leader. In this sense, his collaborations and leadership will be sorely missed, but he left behind an enduring body of work for future generations to enjoy.
