From Life of Action II…
Born on Waiheke Island in New Zealand, Zoë Bell showed natural athleticism from an early age which helped define her future career. As a teenager, she excelled in sports, especially gymnastics and taekwondo, which she practised intensely. Intrigued by the allure of stunts, she auditioned and cut her teeth working on various New Zealand shows before being hired as lead stunt double on hit TV series Xena: Warrior Princess at 17 years old. In the years that followed, she would become one of the top stuntwomen in the world and a trailblazer for women in both action cinema and mainstream film.
With her early Xena career charted in the recommended Double Dare documentary, an energetic, highly-driven audition landed her a job on Kill Bill as Uma Thurman’s stunt double. This led to many collaborations with writer/director Quentin Tarantino both in front and behind the camera in the Grindhouse double-feature (aka Death Proof, paired with Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror), Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Other stunt highlights include Catwoman, The Kingdom, The Final Destination, Iron Man 3 and Thor: Ragnarok, among others.
Also drawn to acting after a creative spark on Kill Bill, these highlights include Angel of Death, Oblivion, Raze and Camino, all of which show her range and versatility, blending dramatics and physicality. Broadening her work further, she has become immersed in filmmaking and was inducted into the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop For Women, supporting new female directing talent in the industry and pre-empting a great deal more to come. In fact, she just signed to CAA which is major news!
Zoë has gone from strength-to-strength by shattering pre-conceived notions of what it means to be both a stunt performer and woman in the film industry. Widely looked to as a role model, she inspires many in and out of the film business through her life, work and multi-faceted career.
